Course Contract Review

Course Contract Review

Complete the following assignment on your blog AFTER completing each exam.

Review your course contract from the beginning of the semester. Answer the following questions:
  1. What are you doing well?So far I have done what I committed to from the start. I studied the way I wanted to, with small groups, flash cards, looked up things I didn't understand. So that went well.
  2. What are you not doing well? Readings. I have done them, I just need to read out loud for myself to understand. Because of this, it takes me so much longer to get through things.
  3. Are you making sufficient progress on your goals? Yes, so far I think things are going as smooth as possible. I am even catching on with the computer things(blogs).
  4. List specific things you need to change in order to meet your goals. Some thing I need to change in order to meet the goals are to set aside more time for my studies. This is hard because I do have three children and I am taking 19 credit hours this semester. But it will happen.
  5. How is your motivation? Are you focusing on mastery or performance goals? Does anything need to change? Motivation is still high I want to learn and get these things done. I think I am focusing more on performance goals, but they will all lead into mastery goals. Like I said earlier I just think I need to set aside more time.

For Course Contract Review #4, consider what you will need to change in future semesters. Consider it a summative experience for this semester and a formative one for next semester.

Educational Neuroscience Blog

What? - What is the individual you chose currently researching? (One complete paragraph)

Dr. Willis studies the inner brain, more specifically the amygdala. Her studies show the learning and retention abilities that the brain has. She goes in to more details on how to help educate people who have learning difficulties with this part of the brain, what you can do to make it stronger and work better. She also uses the RAD system.

So What? -What does this person's research have to do with education? (One complete paragraph that exhibits critical evaluation)

Because of Dr Willis, her studies have shown that most students suffering from ADHD have something wrong with the working part of the amygdala. So she shows ways to teach and educate these people to ensure that they have the same opportunity to learn. So she goes through the strategies and ways you can help educate students for the way that their brain works. For example word puzzles, but the more ways to learn the better.

Now What? - How might you use this person's research in your future classroom? (One complete paragraph that exhibits critical thinking about possible applications)

The way that she shows how to make the brain retain the information, through activities, work groups will help it store more properly in the brain for better retention. So you want to keep the stress down. So make sure the information is explained very well. But the biggest thing is to make it relevant and meaningful.

Motivation Blog

Why are you here (in the teacher education program, in this class, at UVU)?

This time around, I am here because I want to be here. My first time in college I was on scholarship, and that is the only reason I went to school is to play football. This time is different.

What motivates you?

Money used to be the motivator, but now it is being happy. I used to make a high six figure income, but was never happy. So I hope doing something I enjoy will will fix the lack of income, for happiness.

Why do you succeed? Why do you fail? (Use terminology from attribution theory)

According to the attribution theory, An internal factor can be controllable (we can control our effort by trying harder) or uncontrollable (most people cannot easily change their basic intellectual ability or change from being an introvert to being an extrovert). Likewise, an external factor can be controllable (a person failing a difficult course could succeed by taking an easier course) or uncontrollable (if calculus is difficult because it is abstract, it will still be abstract no matter what we do).
So I succeed because I an very competitive and hate to lose at anything. I was raised to be the best in whatever you do.
This is also what makes me fail. It's not really that I failed per say, but if it wasn't the best to me that was failing.
Throughout all my successes and failures I learned, only control the controllable things. Don't worry about the small stuff.

Do the goals in your course contract reflect mastery goals or performance goals? What does this say about you?

For me I think it is a combination of the two. To me it means I don't have any set ways of doing things.

How do you need to change your motivations and mindset for this class in order to become a great teacher?

In order for me to become the great teacher that I want to become, means I need to be willing to learn. Meaning I need to keep an open mind to everything, weather it comes from a professor, fellow student or a student I am teaching. To become a great educator you need to be an eternal student of knowledge.

Course Contract

This assignment should be completed on your blog before our second class session.

List 2-3 specific goals you have for this course.

1. Get the blog thing down, so I stop stressing out.

2. Learn at least three things that I can take away from the class, to us in my career as a teacher.

Describe your weekly preparation plan. Be specific. What will you do each day of the week to prepare for this course. You may want to use this time management tool to help you get organized. I also strongly recommend that you use an online calendar/task list such as Google Calendar to organize your time and assignments.

1. Use a planner.

2. Stay organized.

3. Do assignments as soon as they are assigned.

4. Don't procrastinate.

Outline the study strategies that you will use to understand the material. You planned your time in the previous question, now how will you prepare? This link includes some things to think about.

1. Stay up on the readings.

2. answer all chapter question.

3. Make flashcards.

4. Study groups.

Explain the process you will follow if you do not understand a topic. The Goals page on our class website offers some suggestions. The Internet and other resources are available for you to use on everything except closed-book examinations.

1. Write out the question, then look up answer.

2. Ask study group, or class members any questions for help.

3. Ask the professor.

Complete the following statement:

I will reach my goals in this course by... (your response should be a statement rather than a date! It should summarize everything above.)

I will reach my goals in this course by, attending all classes, due 100% of all given assignments, stay up with the class the best I can, pay attention to all presentations, use study group as much as possible and ask Dr. Cox any and all questions to topics I do not understand.
